San Ramon cascada in Ometepe, Nicaragua

We hiked the San Ramon cascada (waterfall) on the south-western side of the Volcán del Agua, the southern of the two volcanoes that make up the island of Ometepe, Nicaragua.

We start off at the gate to the reserve area.

It gets hot before we hit the slope of the volcano.

We have no pictures of this but it was a relatively serious hike, tough for most adults, grueling for kids with legs half the length of ours. Then it started to drizzle. Then rain. Then really rain. I got worried about the stream swelling and flash floods. I started to think up escape plans to get to high ground. But the riverbed banks kept getting steeper and steeper. The kids are not complainers, but they were complaining!

Finally, we made the top!

Awesome waterfall behind the posers. Liam chucks a rock. Can you spot it flying?

Here’s the panaroma.

Finally, we hiked back down. But look at how deep that stream bed is!

A troupe of howler monkeys were waiting for us at the bottom.
